I fell in love with home automation a few decades ago when I saw a Television show in which a very young Bill Gates asked his house to turn off the lights, and it turned on shortly after. I was used to and have spent countless, often frustrating, hours of home automation experiments during these poor years. Home automation has been an important hobby for many years. However, the recent explosion of interest around the Internet of Things has largely transformed the space for automation into a home. The result is not only better tools, but also allows you to experience all industrial IoT technologies from the comfort of your home.

How to run automatically with Home Assistant, At the heart of every automated home is software called a controller. As you might expect, the controller connects the various devices and implements the basic logic that makes home automation useful. In addition to the basics for turning lights on and off in the evening and at dawn, modern tools can shape the phone and intervene when different people come or go, or even set up a public school. Use the public APIs to determine if it is a during the school holidays and take specific actions. With the proliferation of home assistant devices like Amazon Alexa, I can finally realize my teenage dreams that don't particularly drive anyone and see the lights come on.

Like many innovations these days, much of the home automation process is driven by the open source community. One of the most capable automation controllers and their tools come from the community in the guise of a software package called Home Assistant.

Setting up a home assistant is relatively easy when you get a somewhat ambiguous name notification. If you follow the previous guide to setting up the Home Lab Server, you can follow the Home Assistant instructions for the Home Assistant OS using the Linux LVN virtual machine. Installations are also available for Raspberry Pi and other operating systems, but the Home Assistant OS includes everything needed for a home assistant, including an underlying Linux based IOS and many popular integrations.

How to activate your assistant. Once you've uploaded, configured, and started the virtual machine file on your server, you'll have a web-based frontend that provides an interface to your home. The interface also offers a number of configuration tools, and once you set up a few devices and set up the dashboard.

The biggest challenge of home automation and IoT in general is connecting different devices. Your home thermostat may be using its own cloud, while your alarm system may have an old-fashioned serial port interface. One of the great benefits of Home Assistant is that many of these devices have a default interface called Integration that allows you to access everything from electric car charging stations to Apple LCD Television devices. Allow adding. You may know that you already have a series of notifications announcing that devices have been detected and can be connected, as Home Assistant automatically scans your network and identifies devices. Multiple devices can be provided in each integration, and each device can include one or more entities.

This may sound confusing at first, but take a look at the example of Apple LCD TV integration. I have 2 Apple LCD TV devices at home, so Apple LCD integration creates 2 devices, one for Apple in our bed room and one for Apple in the office. There are 2 entities in each of them. There is a remote that allows the home assistant to send commands such as play, pause, etc. Apple Television Ltd., and another multimedia entity, which identifies the status of Apple Television. Other organizations may have things like light switches or motion sensors.

Home Assistant offers fairly simple tools for creating dashboards to control your devices, but the magic of home automation begins when you really start automating your home and recording changes in different organizations. Get and use this information to control other devices.

Home Assistant uses a markup language called YANL to create automation programs, but it can also use Node RED. I think the first one is a bit of a nest, so I run most of the automation routines in Node Red, which ranges in complexity from activating my office lights in the morning while moving, to determining when we get home from vacation and the HGAIC and lighting system in the same way using the geographic location of our phones.

The possibilities with home automation have always been exciting, and the solid integration of the ability to easily integrate with Home Assistant, solid software and Node Red brings these capabilities closer to the skills of only people like me. There are some great introductory tutorials on the Home Assistant website, and in addition to teaching your home some interesting and useful tricks, you'll also learn the basic skills needed to connect, integrate and interact with various IoTs devices.
